Malta, Rhodes or Crete? Find your kind of island escape

Medieval streets, a harbor afternoon, or a holiday built around beaches and one city: Malta, Rhodes, and Crete offer different starting points for an island escape. The useful question is how you want to spend an ordinary day, not how many sights you can fit on a map.

Choose Malta for Valletta and an optional island outing, Rhodes for Old Town streets and beach time, or Crete for a stay focused on Chania or Heraklion. These suggested five-night plans favor one base and time to enjoy it.

Compare the base, not just the island

Island Starting base to investigate Trip tradeoff
Malta Valletta or a nearby waterfront town City sightseeing; Gozo adds another journey
Rhodes Rhodes Town / Old Town area History locally; a distant resort changes evening travel
Crete Chania or Heraklion, chosen for the itinerary One region first; crossing the island adds travel

For a five-night visit, we recommend one accommodation base and no more than one ambitious outing. That keeps the comparison realistic for travelers reaching Europe from the US. A flight connection or late arrival can reduce the usable first day.

Malta: Valletta first, one island outing second

Visit Malta presents Valletta, Gozo, and Comino as distinct places to explore. For a city-led stay, use two days around Valletta and another for a different town or waterfront area. Keep one day for Gozo if the journey suits your party, and leave the final day flexible.

Malta Public Transport lists Airport Direct TD4 serving Valletta and the Gozo Fast Ferry connection. For a car-free stay, match your accommodation to a stop on that route.

If choosing Gozo Channel, its schedule and links identify the Ċirkewwa connection. Do not confuse that route with the separate Valletta fast-ferry option. Price and plan travel on both sides of the crossing.

Rhodes: keep the Old Town within the stay

The Greek tourism authority’s Rhodes guide identifies the Medieval Town and Lindos as major historical settings. A five-night plan can use two days in and around Rhodes Town, one beach day, one Lindos outing, and one flexible day.

That itinerary favors accommodation in or near town when its streets and evenings are the main appeal. A beach resort can be the right choice for a different holiday, but it should be compared using the actual return journey to town.

For a car-free Lindos outing, obtain the current operator timetable or a specific tour arrangement before committing. Keep a Rhodes Town day for walking; give the Lindos excursion its own departure and return plan.

Crete: choose Chania or Heraklion according to the trip

Crete’s official guide distinguishes western Chania and Rethymno from Heraklion and the wider eastern regions. Chania is a sensible shortlist when the historic harbor and western setting are the appeal. Heraklion suits a plan centered on its Archaeological Museum and Knossos.

Our suggested five-night approach is two local city days, one principal excursion, one beach or outdoor day, and one flexible day. Choose the base according to that principal excursion. Do not add Chania, Heraklion, and several remote beaches just because they share an island.

A city stay can center on local sights; distant coves require a separate transport plan. Decide which holiday you want before adding a rental car.

Which choice is simplest without a car?

Begin with the locally available day: city sights, lunch, and an evening near the room. Valletta and Rhodes Town make that a clear trip concept; Chania or Heraklion can serve the same purpose when the Crete plan stays within one region.

The harder part is the must-do outing. A Gozo crossing, Lindos visit, or distant Crete beach needs a named route, a departure, and a return that works. If that excursion dominates the plan, choose accommodation and transport around it before making a price comparison.

Our recommendation is Malta for a city-plus-island-outing structure, Rhodes for Old Town plus beach time, and one Crete region for a more focused museum, harbor, or outdoor holiday.

Season and budget should match that plan

Sightseeing and swimming place different demands on a season. Compare the operator timetable and attraction opening period for your actual dates; “shoulder season” alone establishes neither warm water nor summer service.

Compare five-night hotel quotes for the same dates and room standard, then add your chosen outings and transport. This guide compares trip styles rather than hotel prices. A cheaper room can require more transport; a central room can save transfers without being the lowest nightly rate.
