A vacation in London, Edinburgh or elsewhere in the United Kingdom now begins with an entry-permission decision. A U.S. citizen visiting for a short vacation generally needs an electronic travel authorisation, or ETA, before traveling, unless an exemption applies. It is linked to the passport used for the application and permits travel to the UK; it does not guarantee admission at the border. The requirement covers England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. UK government ETA overview · U.S. State Department UK guidance
Who needs an ETA for a UK vacation
For a U.S. passport holder planning a conventional sightseeing trip, the ETA is the usual permission to arrange. The UK allows ETA holders to travel for tourism or to visit family and friends for a stay of up to six months. Every traveler needs their own authorization, including babies and children, though an adult may apply on someone else’s behalf. A family should therefore account for each passport before departure rather than treating one parent’s approval as covering the group. UK government ETA overview · What an ETA permits

An ETA is for travel, not a promise of entry or a substitute for permission for every purpose. Someone intending to work for a UK company, settle through repeated visits or marry in the UK should examine the relevant visa route instead. The UK also advises travelers with a criminal record or a previous refusal of entry that they may want to apply for a Standard Visitor visa instead. Those differences matter before buying a trip around an assumption that a tourism ETA will cover its purpose. What an ETA permits
Apply before you travel
Apply through the UK government’s ETA application page, either online or with its ETA app. You need the passport you will travel with, an email address, a way to pay and a photo of the applicant’s face. The online route also requires a photo of the passport; the app uses a phone camera to scan the passport and face. If you are applying for someone who is not with you, use the online route. The government charges a nonrefundable application fee in British pounds and warns that other sites may charge more without producing a faster decision. UK government ETA application instructions
The UK says decisions usually arrive by email within a day, but can take up to three working days. Wait for the approval email before traveling. Members of the same group may receive decisions at different times. If no decision has arrived after three working days, check the spam folder and then contact UK Visas and Immigration using the route on the application page. An application submission alone is not the confirmation you need for departure. UK government ETA application instructions
Keep the passport and approval together
An approved ETA is linked to the passport used to apply, so travel with that passport. The UK says the authorization lasts for two years or until that passport expires, whichever comes first, and permits multiple trips during its validity. If you replace the passport, the old passport’s ETA will not serve the new one; arrange a new authorization before the next UK trip. You can also use the government’s ETA overview to reach its online status check if you are unsure when an existing authorization expires. The passport itself still matters. The U.S. State Department says a U.S. passport must remain valid for the entire planned UK stay. A traveler continuing to another country should examine that destination’s separate passport rules rather than assuming the UK requirement covers the whole journey. For a return visit to Britain, the practical decision is to check both the passport’s expiry and the ETA’s expiry before making travel plans. U.S. State Department UK guidance
Know the exceptions and the transit distinction
A traveler who already has a UK visa or permission to live, work or study in the UK does not need an ETA for that reason. British and Irish citizens are also exempt. A person who holds British or Irish citizenship alongside U.S. citizenship cannot obtain an ETA on the U.S. passport and should follow the UK’s guidance on proving that citizenship when traveling. These are questions to settle before applying, especially when a family contains travelers with different passports or immigration statuses. UK government ETA exemptions
A flight connection can change the answer. The UK distinguishes an airside connection, which does not pass through border control, from a landside connection, which does. The ETA exemption covers airside transit, while an eligible traveler passing through UK border control needs an ETA even when continuing onward. Ask the airline whether the particular connection requires border control; the label “layover” alone does not answer that question. UK government ETA exemptions · UK airport transit guidance
Make the decision before departure
For a straightforward U.S. passport vacation, the plan is simple: use the passport you intend to carry, apply through the official UK route, and travel only after the approval email arrives. If you already hold UK permission, have British or Irish citizenship, or will only connect airside, identify the applicable exception first. If the trip involves work, marriage or another purpose outside ordinary visiting, resolve the correct permission before relying on an ETA. That early decision protects the trip far better than trying to settle an entry question at the airport. UK government ETA overview · What an ETA permits · UK government ETA exemptions
